Starting a new session normally waits for Cake Agents to provision a data plane pod and for that pod to become ready. When you turn on Keep a session warm, Cake Agents keeps one spare session fully provisioned in the background. The next session someone creates takes over that spare instead of waiting for a new pod. The setting is off by default and applies to the whole organization.

When to use a warm session

  • Your users start sessions often and notice the wait while a new session provisions.
  • Your cluster can afford one extra session pod running at all times. The spare consumes compute and storage even when nobody is using it.
Leave the setting off if you want to minimize idle cluster resources.

Prerequisites

  • You are signed in as an administrator.

Turn on a warm session

  1. Sign in to Cake Agents as an administrator.
  2. Open Settings → Organization → General.
  3. Toggle Keep a session warm on.
The setting saves as soon as you select the toggle. Cake Agents checks the spare every minute, so the first spare may take a few minutes to become ready. To stop keeping a spare, toggle Keep a session warm off.

How the warm session works

  • The spare is owned by an internal service account and is always private. It does not appear in anyone’s session list.
  • When you create a session, Cake Agents assigns the ready spare to you with your title, model, privacy setting, and Slack thread, if any.
  • Cake Agents then restarts the spare’s pod so it loads your configuration, such as your providers and instructions. This restart is faster than provisioning a new session from scratch.
  • After a spare is claimed, Cake Agents provisions a new spare in the background for the next session.
  • If no spare is ready, for example because two sessions start at the same time, Cake Agents creates the session the usual way.
