# Add MCP servers for your organization

> Add remote MCP servers to Cake Agents so agents can call their tools. Each user then connects their own account through OAuth from the settings page.

MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers expose tools that agents can call, such as searching a Notion workspace or reading tickets from an issue tracker. Administrators choose which remote MCP servers are available to the organization. Each user then connects their own account to those servers, so agents act with that user's permissions.

## How it works

1. An admin adds an MCP server in **Organization settings → MCP Connectors**.
2. Cake registers itself with the server as an OAuth client.
3. Each user connects their own account in **User settings → MCP Connectors**. See [Connect to MCP servers](/user/mcp-connectors).
4. In that user's sessions, the agent can call the server's tools through the Cake MCP server.

## Requirements

The server must meet these requirements before Cake can add it:

* It is a remote MCP server that uses the Streamable HTTP transport.
* Its URL is an absolute `https://` URL of up to 2,048 characters, with no embedded credentials (`user:pass@`) and no fragment (`#...`).
* It supports OAuth authorization and publishes protected-resource metadata.
* Its authorization server supports automatic client registration through Client ID Metadata Documents (CIMD) or Dynamic Client Registration (DCR).
* Cake can reach it under your egress policy.

## Add a server

You need the **admin** role.

1. Open **Organization settings → MCP Connectors**.
2. Under **Add an MCP server**, enter a **Name**, for example `Notion`.
3. Enter the server **URL**, for example `https://mcp.example.com/mcp`.
4. Select **Add server**.

Cake contacts the server and registers as an OAuth client before it saves the server. If registration fails, Cake doesn't save the server and shows the reason under the form.

| Message | What it means |
| - | - |
| Not an MCP server | The URL doesn't serve MCP protected-resource metadata. Check that you entered the MCP endpoint, not the provider's website. |
| This MCP server doesn't support automatic OAuth registration | The authorization server supports neither CIMD nor DCR. |
| Cake couldn't register with this MCP server | The authorization server rejected Cake's registration request. |
| The MCP server or its authorization server is unreachable under the egress policy | Your network policy blocks Cake from reaching the server. |
| The MCP server or its authorization server rejected the registration | The upstream server returned an error. Try again later. |

### Choose a name

The name labels the server in settings and prefixes its tools for agents. Agents see each tool as `<name>.<tool>`. For example, a `search` tool on a server named `Notion` appears as `Notion.search`.

Names are case-sensitive. Pick a short, unique name for each server, because Cake rejects tool calls when two servers share a name.

## Remove a server

1. Open **Organization settings → MCP Connectors**.
2. Select the trash icon next to the server.
3. Select **Remove server** to confirm.

Agents lose access to the server immediately. You can't undo this. To restore access, add the server again and ask users to reconnect.
